The micro-scale project “Koalisation Community-Based Clean Cooking Program” is a high-impact initiative launched in Mapalo, an area in the heart of Chipulukusu—one of Zambia’s largest informal settlements. This program aims to prevent and mitigate the negative effects of charcoal consumption by promoting sustainable solutions and improving the quality of life for local communities.
Thanks to the commitment of Koalisation and its team, 1,050 efficient cookstoves have already been distributed. These stoves can reduce charcoal use by up to 70% compared to traditional cooking methods. This technology not only cuts CO₂ emissions but also decreases health risks associated with the use of polluting fuels.
To support the community’s social development, a water tower has been built, providing access to clean water for hundreds of families. Additionally, 9,000 fruit trees have been nurtured for planting at beneficiaries’ homes, contributing to food security and environmental sustainability.
To foster local economic growth, Koalisation has established an operations hub where training is provided to beneficiaries on high-value activities.
The next phases of the project include the distribution of 1,850 additional cookstoves, construction of a second water tower, and planting of 2,500 more fruit trees, with the goal of impacting the entire Mapalo community.
